China’s new map of the moon captures lunar geologic features in incredible detail

Recently, We found China’s new map of the moon. scientists have come up with a new high-resolution new map of the moon. This high-resolution map was created in accordance with the data obtained from the recent lunar launch missions of China. On the other hand, the map was also created using the data that was mainly obtained from China’s Lunar Exploration Program.

This data was collected long back and over the past 15 years. However, it is later modified with high-quality data that is obtained from various international exploration missions from the U.S., India, and Japan.

What does the high-resolution map of the moon reveal?

The high-resolution map mainly reveals the geological layers of the moon’s surface. It also helps in revealing the structural features and a chronology of the surface of the moon. The high-resolution map also includes a count of about 12,341 impact craters, 17 rock types, 81 impact basins, and about 14 different types of structures.

What does China’s new high-resolution map reflect?

The high-resolution map reflects the lunar crust’s evolution that took place under the igneous process and various catastrophic impacts. The evolution of the lunar crust also faced many volcanic activities n the middle. This news is written by the research team in a recent newspaper publication.

The high-resolution map released by China uses a projection named Mollweide projection. The Mollweide projection is said to create an elliptical view of the moon. On the other hand, China also has a plan of providing stereographic projections that are centered separately on the north and south poles of the Earth.

This new work will be further helpful to the researchers in many ways. The researchers can use the newly obtained work for the purpose of further lunar geologic mapping. On the other hand, the work can also be utilized for the landing site selection for many future missions that will be taking place in the future.

Just a few years back, NASA put up a collaboration with the Lunar Planetary Institute (LPI) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Science Center. This massive collaboration resulted in the mapping and categorization of the entire moon’s surface. This was the first time the moon’s surface was categorized and it is done in the year 2020.

Who took the initiative to create the high-resolution map of the moon?

There are several Chinese universities that were part of this great mission. The high-resolution map was generated by the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as part of its collaboration with some other popular universities.

These universities include the China University of Geosciences, Shandong University, and the Chinese Academy of Geological Science. All the above universities played a major role in leading the initiative to create the world’s most detailed high-resolution map of the moon.

Conclusion

The newly created high-resolution map is said to be the most detailed map of the moon. This perfect detailing of the moon can further help in making many vital contributions to human knowledge while making decisions regarding the closest celestial object to the Earth.

The map will also help in future moon research that will be done by China. According to many reports that came up, the high-resolution map is said to be designed at a scale of 1:2,500,000. This in-detail scaling made it the most detailed map to date.
